An Auto Recloser — also called an Automatic Circuit Recloser (ARCB) — is an intelligent, self-contained protection device for medium voltage overhead distribution lines.
It detects faults on the line, trips to clear the fault, and then automatically recloses after a preset dead time. Since 80–90% of faults on overhead 11kV and 33kV lines are transient — caused by lightning strikes, tree contact, bird contact — the auto recloser clears most faults in seconds. Power is restored automatically. No truck roll. No manual reset. No prolonged outage.
For DISCOMs, industrial plants, and renewable energy grid connections, this means fewer outages, lower O&M costs, and better reliability indices (SAIDI/SAIFI).

Auto Recloser vs Sectionalizer — Which Do You Need?
Auto reclosers and sectionalizers are often used together on the same feeder — but they serve completely different purposes.
An auto recloser interrupts fault current and restores power automatically. A sectionalizer cannot interrupt fault current — it counts upstream recloser operations and opens during dead time to isolate the faulted feeder section.
ESPL manufactures both. For most distribution feeder automation schemes, the recommended arrangement is one auto recloser at the feeder source with one or more sectionalizers downstream at branch junctions.
